Dal palak:  I am sure everyone eats dal 3-4 times in a week so today I am writing a recipe for Dal palak which is dal with green leaves and source of a lot of protein. This is another way to give Spinach to kids as they don’t like it.

Dal and Palak (Spinach) is a great combo of protein and fiber. This is made with Lentils (dal), Spinach (palak) and garlic. This Dal is quick and easy to make, healthy recipe and can be served with roti or rice or both.

Dal palak can be prepared with any Dal: yellow moong dal (split green gram), chana dal (split chickpea) and Toor dal (Pigeon peas) all give awesome taste. Spinach can be added as a puree or chopped. Chopped spinach gives nice texture and crunch in the Dal.

I usually prepare dal palak with moong dal and chana dal but never got a chance with Toor Dal yet. Today I have prepared my dal palak with chana dal.

 Here is detailed recipe:

Ingredients

  • Chana Dal ½ cup
    Spinach 1 cup (roughly chopped)
    Salt 1 tsp.
    Turmeric Powder ½ tsp.
    Desi ghee/clarified butter 1 tbsp
    Oil 1 tsp.
    Asafetida 1 pinch
    Cumin Seeds ½ tsp
    Onion 1 small
    Ginger 2 tsp. (chopped)
    Garlic 2 cloves (minced)
    Green chilies 1 (chopped)
    Tomato 1 medium
    Cilantro to garnish

Method

Step 1

Wash and soak chana dal for 30 min. Drain and pressure cook the dal with double amount of water.

Step 2

Add pinch of turmeric powder and salt for 3 -4 whistles.

Step 3

Switch off the flame and let the pressure go down itself. Open the lid and check whether dal is cooked or not, check the doneness by pressing the dal in between your fingers tips. If cooked lightly pressed the dal with a spatula.

Step 4

Wash and cut the stem from the spinach. Chop them roughly. Heat ghee over medium heat in a pan. Once ghee is hot add asafetida and cumin seeds. When seeds start to crackle, add chopped onion.

Step 5

Sauté it till light brown. Then add chopped ginger, garlic and green chilies and sauté it till raw aroma of garlic goes away.

Step 6

Then add chopped tomatoes and cook till becoming mussy. Now add chopped spinach and mix it well. Cook till spinach leafs leaves its water.

Step 7

Mix it well. Cook till spinach leafs leaves its water. Now add coriander powder, cooked dal and 1 cup of water.

Step 8

Mix it well and cook for another 4 -5 min. Now add garam masala and switch off the flame.

Dal Palak is ready to serve with roti or steamed rice.

Notes

  1. 1. You can also boil the chopped spinach then add in the onion tomato mixture.
  2. 2. You can make spinach puree and then add it into onion tomato mixture.
  3. 3. The quantity of dal and spinach can be altered as per taste.
